Hasu P. Shah is Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Hersha Hospitality Trust (NYSE: HT), a position he has held since the Company’s inception in 1998. Mr. Shah is also a Senior Partner of the Hersha Group of Companies, based in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Mr. Shah began his career in lodging with the purchase of a single hotel in Central Pennsylvania in 1984. Over the last 3 decades, Mr. Shah has developed, managed, or owned over 100 hotels across the United States and led other businesses in general construction, purchasing and assisted living. Mr. Shah’s numerous professional achievements include serving on the board of directors at Graystone Tower Bank and Montour Bank, corporations he also co-founded. He received Ernst & Young’s Entrepreneur of the Year Award in 1995, was recognized as HVS’s Top Performing Chief Executive Officer in the Lodging Industry in 2004, and was awarded the Hall of Fame award from the Central Penn Business Journal in 2011 for lifetime achievements in both business and philanthropy.

Mr. Shah and his wife, Hersha, received the prestigious National Tocqueville Award from the United Way Worldwide in 2010 for their outstanding humanitarian efforts locally, nationally and globally, joining a distinguished list of honorees that include President Ronald Reagan, President Jimmy Carter, Bill Gates, and Bob Hope. In 2012, Mr. Shah earned the Ellis Island Medal of Honor, bestowed by the National Ethnic Coalition of Organizations, for exemplifying outstanding qualities in both his personal and professional life, while continuing to preserve the richness of his heritage. In addition, Mr. Shah was awarded the Creating Voice award by Project IMPACT, which honors South Asian American community leaders. As a result of Mr. Shah’s commitments to sustaining the Asian American community, Governor Corbett appointed him to serve on Pennsylvania’s Advisory Commission on Asian American Affairs. Mr. Shah has been an active Rotarian for nearly 29 years, and even established a sister rotary club in Mumbai, India to help start a health care program in Nairobi, Kenya. He continues to serve as a trustee of several community service and spiritual organizations, including the Vraj Hindu Temple and the India Heritage Research Foundation. As the President of India Heritage Research Foundation, Mr. Shah, along with more than a thousand scholars, contributed to the creation of an 18 volume Encyclopedia of Hinduism.

Mr. Shah earned a Master of Engineering Administration Degree from Pennsylvania State University, who granted him the title of Alumni Fellow, the most prestigious award given by the University. Mr. Shah also holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemical Engineering from Tennessee Technical University, and he is an alumnus of the Owner and Presidents Management Program at Harvard Business School. He has also been awarded Honorary Doctorates in Public Service from Harrisburg Area Community College, as well as an Honorary Doctorate degree in Humane Letters from Central Penn College to recognize his significant contributions to both the community and business. Mr. Shah, and his wife Hersha, reside in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, where they remain active within business and community affairs.
